Bouncy Balls Overview

Playing with a bouncy ball is a fun activity for children of all ages.  There are a variety of different types of balls on the market and choosing the right ball can be overwhelming. To choose the right ball for your child’s needs, there are some points to consider.

First, you must decide on the appropriate size and use.  A larger ball can be useful to bounce against walls, to toss around with friends, or to hit with a bat.  Smaller balls are geared towards chasing the ball after it has bounced, and often have a higher bounce than larger bounce balls due to their light weight.

Next it’s best to decide which shape of ball you are wanting.  A classing round ball will be an efficient bouncer, perfect for hitting with a bat, but won’t have any ricochet change when it hits the ground.  If you choose a ball with flatter edges, the ball will change direction when it hits the ground, making the chase game more fun.  This can also help teach children about geometric angles along with cause and effect.

The quantity of bounce balls needed should also be considered.  Some balls come with only one in the package while others come with a large quantity.

The final thing we must consider is the experience.  Some bounce balls provide more of a learning experience than others.  A traditional bounce ball will keep a child active while other bounce balls will have a chemistry or physics experiment in the package.  The color and external design will add to this experience.

We have compiled a list of various bouncy balls, from the bounciest to the best learning experience, we have them all!

Here are the best rubber kids bouncy balls:

1. Best for Games: Waboba Moon Bouncy Ball

4.5 out of 5 stars

Waboba Moon Bouncy Ball Review

The Waboba Moon Ball is a 2.5 inch ball that will be useful for bouncing against walls, the street, even hitting with a paddle or bat. This ball can bounce up to 100 feet in the air!

The shape of the Waboba is a faceted ball, making the ricochet experience fun! It would also be a great lesson for children in geometry and physics to develop hand-eye coordination.

There is only one ball with this product.  This would not be useful if you need a large number of balls or they easily get lost. The experience for this ball would be fun, exciting, and challenging for your child. The Waboba would be an excellent learning tool, making physical play fun and group activities engaging.

One negative to this ball would be that there is only one. If you have more than one child or the ball could be easily lost, you will want to consider that, and maybe purchase more than one.

Brand Waboba

2. Best Large Quantity Set: Narwhal Novelties Bouncing Balls

Where to buy:

4.5 out of 5 stars

Narwhal Novelties Bouncing Balls Review

The Narwhal Novelties Bouncing Balls are one-inch bouncy balls in a variety of colors and patterns.  These balls would be useful for outdoor play and chase games.  Discontinue use if there are breakable objects around.

These bounce balls are a basic small round ball.  No interesting shapes to note.

The Narwhal ball set has 250 bounce balls included.  This is perfect for a large gathering of children or activity where a lot of balls are needed.  If a ball gets lost, you could easily have a spare on hand.

The learning experience with the Narwhal is going to be a fun and exciting chase, along with “find it” games in grassy or wooded areas, perfect for early childhood development.

One negative we see is the small size of the ball will be easy to lose down drains during outside play, be careful to watch for that during play.

Brand Narwhal Novelties

3. Best Overall: Juvale 100 Count Bouncy Balls Party Favors

Where to buy:

See Product Amazon
See Product Walmart

4.5 out of 5 stars

Juvale Bouncy Balls Party Favors Review

Juvale Bouncy Balls Party Favors are 1.25 inches in diameter, a small ball that is built for chasing games. The fun variation of colors could make a great eye spy game as well.

These bounce balls are small and round, with no variation in shape. Its elastic polymer material makes a huge recoil, making it not safe for indoor use.

Juvale comes with 100 bounce balls.  If you are looking for balls for a large number of children or need to have some on hand in case of a lost ball, this is a great choice. It would also open the option for pick up ball style games.

The experience for this ball set is pretty straight forward.  The balls have a high bounce so they would be a fun chase, but not much else.

One negative we see is the lack of variation in the shape of the ball. If you are looking for an all-inclusive learning experience, this might not be the best choice.

Original Retail $17
Brand Juvale

4. Bounciest: SNInc. Icy Super Bouncy Balls

Where to buy:

See Product Amazon
See Product Walmart

4.5 out of 5 stars

Icy Super Bouncy Balls Review

Icy Super Balls are a 1.25 inch ball that are perfect for chase play.

Icy bounce balls are a basic round shape.  This would be useful for throwing or bouncing, but not for learning geometric lessons.

There are 24 balls in this set, perfect for party favors, multiple children, or easily lost ball replacements.

One unique experience about this product is the frosty external layer.  This frost provides an extra layer of elasticity, making it one of the bounciest balls we’ve reviewed.  It would be an experience in sensory as well.

One negative is that there isn’t much of an experience with this ball.  It’s pretty straight forward.

Original Retail $8

Brand SNInc

5. Best Multi-Use: Pinky Premium Rubber Bouncy Ball

Where to buy:

See Product Amazon
See Product Walmart

4 out of 5 stars

Pinky Premium Rubber Bouncy Ball Review

Pinky Premium Rubber Ball is a 2.5” high bounce rubber ball. This larger ball would be perfect for wall ball games, hitting with a bat or stick, throwing to friends, or just bouncing against a wall to develop hand-eye coordination.

The Pinky is a larger round ball, basic, but it is made from sponge rubber that provides a high bounce.

This product contains a 24 pack of balls.  This will work well for games with multiple children or in easily lost areas.

The Pinky provides a great physics experience.  Its use of sponge rubber makes for a higher bounce than a traditional ball because of it’s lighter weight. It does have the added benefit of being useful during massage, yoga, or pressure point therapy.

A con we see is the Pinky’s lack of shape choice.  If you are wanting an unexpected ricochet effect, this ball would not be the right choice.

Original Retail $28

Brand Pinky

6. Best for Kids: Creative Kids DIY Magic Bouncy Balls

4 out of 5 stars

Creative Kids DIY Magic Bouncy Balls Review

The Creative Kids DIY Magic Bouncy Balls set creates a variety of sizes for balls.  Both small and large, this would be perfect for anyone who wants versatility of size.

This DIY set has multiple shape options for learning fun!  You could roll some, ricochet others, and learn all about different geometric shapes while playing.

This set creates 43 unique balls. This will work well for many children to play with or for balls that are lost easily.

The experience with the Creative Kids set is all-inclusive.  This will provide sensory experiences, children will learn about chemistry, bonding agents, physics, force, and geometric shapes.

One negative aspect is the time between creation and play.  If you want a ready to play ball, this is not the one for you.

Bouncy Ball FAQs

What makes bouncy balls bounce?

In order for a ball to bounce, it needs to be made from materials that have elasticity. These materials will not only maintain their shape, but they will help to absorb the contact against another object. Because the properties that the ball is made of is flexible, they are able to flex on impact creating a bounce off of the impact.

The materials used to make bouncy balls normally consists of rubber as well as other polymers that can stretch without breaking.

What is bouncing a ball called?

A bouncy ball is also called a rubber ball due to the materials it is made from. You may also hear them called power balls, superballs and the Wham-O superballs.

How does bouncy balls noise meter work?

As the sound in the class room increases, the screen will display bouncy balls, emoji’s, plastic balls, eyeballs, or bubbles that will rise up from the bottom of the screen and move around until the level of noise decreases. It features a noise control meter that teachers can adjust for their classroom. The app is free for teachers to use.

What noise does a ball make?

The noise that a ball makes will depend on the surface which it bounces off of. It would most likely sound like a thump on most common surfaces.

2 tablespoons of warm water

1 disposable spoon

What to do:
Pour borax and water together in one cup and stir until blended. In another cup, add all of the glue.

Pour the glue into a plastic cup. Add the cornstarch and only ½ teaspoon of the borax and water mixture. Allow it to set untouched for 20 seconds and then stir until blended.

Take the mixture out of the cup and place it between your hands and roll it around to form a ball. Allow it to dry before you play with it.

How do you make a bouncy ball for science fair?

You want your science fair project to be unique. Here is a cool recipe for a science fair:

Materials you will need:
1 tablespoon of white glue

½ teaspoon of borax (found in the laundry detergent aisle at most stores)

1 tablespoon of cornstarch

2 tablespoons of warm water

Food coloring if you want to give the bouncy ball a color

Other supplies Include:
Measuring spoons

2 plastic cups

Craft sticks to mix the ingredients together

1 permanent market

Resealable bag

What to do
Before you begin, you will want to take your market and write “Borax” on one cup. Then put the following ingredients into this cup: warm water, food coloring, and borax. Now, using a craft stick, stir until completely blended.

In the second cup, pour the following ingredients: glue, cornstarch, and ½ teaspoon of the borax mixture from the other cup.

Wait 15 seconds and then stir the ingredients in the second cup using a craft stick. Keep stirring until the mixture is thick and becomes too hard to stir.

Pour the mixture out onto a hard surface and knead the ball for 2-3 minutes. Place the ball into the bag and take it out when you want to bounce it around. Be sure to put it back into the bag when you are done playing so it won’t dry out.

This recipe will make one standard bouncy ball like the ones you would find in a store. Be sure to follow the recipe and measure carefully.

What is inside a bouncy ball?

Bouncy balls are made from polymers inside which allow it to flex when bouncing without breaking so the ball always bounces back

Why does crazy ball bounce so much?

Crazy balls can bounce more because it is made from polyurethane and polyvinyl chloride. The polyvinyl chloride can be flexible which can give it a bounce.

Where does a bouncing ball’s energy go?

When the bouncy ball falls, the energy inside is converted to kinetic energy. When the bouncy ball hits the floor, the kinetic energy will transfer to the floor and then convert to friction, allowing the elastic potential energy to bounce the ball back up.

Do heavier balls bounce higher?

A heavy ball will fall at the same speed as a light ball. The heavier the ball, the more energy the ball gains while in motion. Once the ball reaches the ground or floor, it doesn’t have as much energy anymore and doesn’t bounce back as high as a lighter ball would.

Can a ball bounce forever?

No. It cannot bounce forever. Once the ball lands on the floor, it will change some of the energy inside to different forms, like heat. This will slow the ball down.

Will a ball of glass bounce higher than a ball of (non-bouncy) rubber?

If you drop a glass ball and a rubber ball at the same time and if they are the same size, the glass balls will bounce higher. Steel balls will bounce higher than a rubber ball as well.
