It’s been a very long time in gaming terms since Fable 3 came out. Since then, the popular series from Lionsgate has pretty much faded away. The franchise didn’t even get an entry on the Xbox One, and it’s been more than ten years since Fable 3: practically an eternity in this field.

But now, the Fable franchise is finally looking at a rebirth on the Xbox Series X|S. Of course, we’ve actually known that for a little while, since Microsoft gave us a reveal trailer for a new Fable game back in their 2020 showcase. Oddly enough though, information about the new Fable game has been especially vague since then.

Admittedly, info is still pretty scarce, but for those who care, we’ve compiled it all here. First of all, we should probably say that the mysterious game is only being called Fable 4 for ease of reference. No one actually knows if it will be a direct sequel to Fable 3, or if it will have a different name.

Fable 4 Release Date and Platforms

The good news is that Fable 4 is confirmed to be available for the Series X|S, as well as PC when it releases. On the other hand, we have no idea when that release is going to be. Microsoft’s website for the title lists no release date whatsoever. There’s not even a soft window.

Of particular note is the fact that the game may not be available on the Xbox One, as it isn’t listed as a guaranteed release platform. According to the Xbox Games Marketing team, this does not mean it won’t release on the Xbox One for sure, but it is a distinct possibility that is mostly in the hands of the developing team.

It should also be noted that, since all Xbox first-party games are available on Game Pass upon release, we can reasonably expect Fable 4 to be on Game Pass on release day as well, whenever that may be.

Fable 4 Developers

The original developer of the Fable series was Peter Molyneux’s Lionhead Studios. Unfortunately, it shut down back in 2016 when Fable Legends, a co-op action RPG for the series, was canceled. This of course means the developers of Fable 4 won’t be the old guard that did the first three games.

Instead, the new entry into the series will be helmed by Playground Games. That may seem a little odd considering that they are best known for the Forza Horizon games, and racing doesn’t seem like the right expertise for a fantasy action RPG. However, Playground Games is also pretty well known for their large open worlds, which does fit the bill.

Playground made a separate studio outside of the Horizon team back in 2017, to work on an untitled game. Now, it seems likely that the unknown game at that time was Fable 4.

Notable members of this team working on Fable 4 include Anna Megill, lead writer for Control and narrative director for Dishonored: Death of the Outsider. Lead scriptwriter for Batman: Arkham Asylum Martin Lancaster, will be the narrative director for Fable 4. Craig Owens and Martin Tan from Rocksteady will be joining him. Notable names from GTA V, The Division 2, and Hellblade will also be a part of the team. Of course, many team members also worked on the Forza Horizon games.
