It was all the way back in 2017 that Activision Blizzard remastered the original Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Thanks to a leak from the South Korean ratings board, it seems that the sequel to the fan favorite may be on track to get the same treatment.

This information comes from the Game Rating and Administration Committee, or GRAC. Their site has a listing for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered, registered on February 26th. Of course, the name makes it obvious that this remaster only tackles the campaign, and not the multiplayer, but anything is better than nothing by a long shot.

That said, the original Modern Warfare remastered did also have its multiplayer included, with fresh achievements and tweaks. That said, the listing for Modern Warfare 2’s campaign could just be separate from the multiplayer: there’s no guarantee that the multiplayer for the second game isn’t a getting a remastered treatment as well.

Of course, it’s important to note that none of this should be confused with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, which was the relaunch of the Modern Warfare series that came out last year. It’s getting a ton of content in the form of battle passes and free expansions like the battle royale Warzone mode, accessible to players even if they don’t have the base game. This free aspect has been massively successful, with millions of players logging in for a taste of the free-for-all battlefield.

But again, none of that is tied to the remastered Modern Warfare 2. A reboot is an entirely new take on a previous franchise, but a remaster is just putting brand new graphics and controls on top of a game that already existed.

One might wonder if there is any point in remastering an older Modern Warfare game when the series has just recently been rebooted, but there’s little doubt that many longtime Call of Duty fans will enjoy the nostalgia of being able to play a game from the series’ past.

Unfortunately, this leak from GRAC is just that: a leak. It’s not exactly concrete evidence, and even if it were, we don’t have anything even close to a release date to look at, so it still wouldn’t do to get one’s hopes up too early.

That said, there’s no harm in putting some stock in this leak, as it seems perfectly reasonable for Activision Blizzard to remaster the sequel to one of their most popular entries in the Call of Duty franchise. Moreover, the remaster of the first game was pretty profitable, so it stands to reason that a Modern Warfare 2 remake will be pretty successful as well.

Now, if only they could get around to remastering the old school Call of Duty games, like World at War and Big Red One, and the world would be a better place at last. Unfortunately, that’s probably a pipe dream at best.
