Reportedly, Justice League Dark: Apokolips War will mark the end of the Justice League Shared Animated Universe that launched back in 2013 with Oliva’s Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox. The allegation that Apokolips War will end the shared universe is put forth by ComicBook.com. If this is true, Apokolips War will be both the 15th and final film in the continuity.
Before any DC fan gets upset by this news, don’t worry: Warner Bros has confirmed that they will continue to make animated movies for DC Comics. However, it is unclear if they will be related to the current continuity in any way, or if they will be independent movies. The next movie after Apokoliips War may even start an entirely new continuity,
Apokolips War would be a pretty good send off for this particular Justice League continuity. Directed by Matt Peters and Christina Sotta, the movie will have the largest cast of superheroes of any DC Universe movie, with dozens of heroes from across multiple movies joining in. It’s six years of heroes and stories coming together for one epic finale, making it a pretty solid choice when it comes to ending a particular continuity.
As for voice actors reprising the roles of characters they have played before, we’ll see the talents of Matt Ryan, Jerry O’Connell, and Taissa Farmiga again. These three voiced the roles of Constantine, Superman, and Raven respectively. Alongside them will be Rosario Dawson as Wonder Woman, Jason O’Mara as Batman, Shemar Moore as Cyborg, and Christopher Gorham as The Flash. The main villain of the film, Darkseid, will once again be voiced by Tony Todd.
Despite being an animated film, the movie has been rated R for “bloody violence, language, and some sexual references.” It’s also a direct sequel to the 2017 Justice League film, Justice League Dark, which received critical acclaim from many reviewers. Hopefully Apokolips War will reach the same level of quality, but we won’t know anytime soon, as the movie isn’t coming until spring 2020. And of course, with all the Coronavirus nonsense plaguing the world, it is possible that such a debut date could be delayed if Warner Bros needs it.
But if we don’t suffer that irritating fate, the film will be released on Blu-Ray, digital and DVD, so there are plenty of options for enjoying it when it does come out.
As for whether or not we will get more films at any decent pace following Apokolips War, no one can say for certain. It seems likely that Warner Bros might need a little time to plot out their new continuity or independent films, so perhaps there will be a long break in DC Comics films following this one. Or, maybe corporate will demand that films be pushed out regularly despite such obstacles. Until we actually get past the release of this next DC Comics film, there’s no telling how the animated Justice League universe will continue.
